ICE SHACKS

When winter comes, the ice shacks begin to appear on the frozen ice of the lakes & rivers of Canada.

To capture these photographs, I put on my nordic skis, and head out onto the ice with my camera.

The Ice Shack series is an ongoing multi-year project that highlights the unique architecture of ice fishing huts.
A seasonal undertaking, it captures a little piece of Canadiana, and is a cultural archive of life in the North.

Sometimes I find a solitary shack miles from any other, other times I’ll come across a whole cluster of them like a tiny village on a barren landscape.

Mostly I love the quiet solitude of being out on the ice. Alone with the sound of my skis and the wind to keep me company.
